EquOpp
If you care about equity and social justice, EquOpp is made for you!
EquOpp (short for Equal Opportunities) aims to raise awareness among students, and, in particular, within the bodies of the Fribourg General Students' Association (AGEF), such as the Student’s Council (CE) and the Executive Committee on issues relating to social justice and the various forms of discrimination.
EquOpp is a thematic commission of the AGEF, made up of engaged students with an intersectional vision. We deal with issues, such as: gender equality, the fight against racial discrimination and queerphobia, better inclusion of people with disabilities, and student precariousness.
EquOpp offers a range of activities to the student body.
- Firstly, on the last Tuesday of each month, three times per semester, we organize Feminist Meet-Ups. These are get-togethers to discuss a theme (and have a drink!) with the chance to meet new people, all in a friendly atmosphere.
- Several times a year, we organize conferences where we bring in speakers to tackle certain subjects from a more academic standpoint as well as more participative workshops (like the civil courage workshop offered by the association 1700, for example).
- Every semester, we organize a queer party to provide a safe environment for everyone.
Once a month, we hold a plenary session to discuss current issues. It's open to people who aren't yet members of the committee, so if you're interested in EquOpp, it is a chance to find out more about how we work and how we're organized.
In recent years, EquOpp has been particularly involved in university life through two major projects.
- Firstly, the discrimination reporting tool: a questionnaire that allows anyone to report any discrimination they have witnessed anonymously. You can find out more about this a little further down the page.
- Our second project was the design, construction, and installation of menstrual protection boxes on campus. Thanks to the support of the AGEF and the help of the University, the boxes were set up at the start of the 2022 spring semester and are filled each month with tampons and sanitary towels. From 2024 onward, the State of Fribourg will take over the project and extend it to many buildings throughout the Canton. It's a great step forward!
Besides our various events and projects, politics play an important part in our activities. We work with the various university bodies, particularly the EDI (Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity) department, as well as with as many associations in the city of Fribourg as possible. We want to create a real change to make our university a safe, non-discriminatory and inclusive place for everyone.
All the dates of our events are published on our Instagram page, so don't hesitate to subscribe! If you'd like to join us or work with us, you can come along to our monthly plenary or contact us by email at equopp@unifr.ch.
