Regretting You is a typical high school drama featuring adults who, even 17 years later, seem unable to let go of their own teenage conflicts. The story, directed by Josh Boone and released in October 2025, follows the Grant family as they navigate grief, love, and long-buried tensions.

The movie alternates between past and present, showing flashbacks of two sisters, Jenny (Willa Fitzgerald) and Morgan (Allison Williams), during their teenage years. Back then, they were dating two best friends, Chris (Scott Eastwood) and Jonah (Dave Franco). Those relationships shaped much of their adult lives. In the present timeline, the focus shifts to Morgan and Chris’s teenage daughter, Clara (played by McKenna Grace).
The relationship between Clara and her mother, Morgan, sometimes felt forced and unnatural. In contrast, Clara’s bond with her aunt came across as much more genuine and heartfelt, even though it was cut short early in the film.
Amid this emotional backdrop, Clara struggles with loss and finds herself entangled in her own romantic drama with Miller Adams (Mason Thames), a boy who’s already in a relationship. Still, the two teens have undeniable chemistry between them. Miller Adams is portrayed as the mysterious, artsy type who, for some reason, always has a lollipop in his mouth. Clara Grant, on the other hand, is the classic gifted student, the sweet, girl-next-door figure. Although their chemistry is undeniable, their conflicts reveal a distinctly adolescent immaturity.
The movie is based on Colleen Hoover’s 2019 novel Regretting You. Hoover, a bestselling US-American author, has become a prominent figure in the BookTok scene thanks to her emotionally charged stories about love, family, and heartbreak. Recently, several of her works have been adapted for film, including It Ends With Us last year and the upcoming 2026 adaptations Regretting Him and Verity.
A standout supporting performance comes from Sam Morelos, who plays Clara’s best friend Lexie. Her witty, unapologetic Gen-Z humor provides much-needed comic relief throughout the film, balancing out the heavy emotional tone.
Overall, Regretting You delivers exactly what one would expect from a Colleen Hoover adaptation: emotional turmoil, complicated relationships, and dramatic revelations. While it doesn’t reinvent the high school drama genre, it still manages to offer enough heartfelt performances and humor to make it an enjoyable, if somewhat predictable, watch.
